About
Kitty Islet is a small, 0.6-hectare natural waterfront area in Oak Bay, home to a rare and imperiled maritime meadow ecosystem. It’s located along the east side of McNeill Bay.
Kitty Islet was once the site of a Songhees camp, connected to the main village of Chikawich, located further west along the bay (Source: BurntEmbers.com).
This quiet oceanside spot offers stunning views of the sea and distant mountains, making it a favourite for birdwatching, fishing, sea lion spotting, or simply enjoying a peaceful coastal stroll.
You’ll find a few Adirondack chairs up on a large rock formation where you can sit and enjoy the view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the Salish Sea.
When visiting the area, you’ll have views of the Trial Islands Lighthouse. The original lighthouse was built in 1906 and was replaced with the one that stands today in 1970.
In 2015, after years of dedication by the Oak Bay Heritage Foundation and overwhelming public support, Trial Islands Lighthouse was officially granted heritage status.
Apparently there was a tea party going on under the waves at some point. Check out Snorkelling the Salish Sea’s video to learn more.
