Lokier Gardens

Lokier Gardens is a vibrant landscaped garden in Oak Bay, lovingly transformed from a neglected lot into a lasting legacy of beauty and community spirit.

About

  • Lokier Gardens is a charming green space nestled in just 0.142 hectares.

  • Filled with vibrant roses, blooming flowers, and lush shrubs, it offers a peaceful spot for passersby to pause, sit, and enjoy the beauty of this ornamental garden.

  • The garden is named after Thomas Lokier, a well-loved Oak Bay resident whose home once overlooked this very spot, originally intended for a war memorial.

  • When the memorial placed at Cattle Point instead, the lot was left to overgrow with weeds and neglect.

  • But rather than let it fall into ruin, Mr. Lokier took it upon himself to transform the space.

  • At 83 years old, he funded a rose garden, new plants and fencing, and even designed and built the park’s iron gates by hand.

  • In recognition of his generosity and vision, the garden was officially dedicated to him in 1963 on his 95th birthday.

  • He passed away six years later, at the remarkable age of 101 but left behind a legacy that continues to flourish today.

  • The gardens used to have a large sculpture of a nose and glasses at the entrance but it now has a sculpture entitled ‘Midwestern Summer’ by Andrew Hellmund.

  • Hellmund’s sculptures are made with found and discarded materials, bridging the industrial and the natural while challenging our perceptions of form, space, presence, and absence.
