About
Spiral Beach is located just east of Cook Street in Victoria.
Captain James Cook (1728–1779), the namesake of Cook Street, was a British explorer and naval officer who completed three major voyages across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1779.
On his third journey, in 1778, heavy fog caused him to miss the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and he instead made landfall at Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island (source).
The beach is a popular spot for swimming and paragliding.
The large concrete spiral staircase was formerly a turret and was likely built during WWII.
